Trumbull Governments Collaborate to Save

Posted byChris Thompson - 08.25.2010

EfficientGovNow has taught us that there are numerous opportunities for greater collaboration among our local governments and every month new initiatives are launched. The latest involves all of the governments in Trumbull County.

Tony Paglia, vice president of government relations at the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber that serves the Mahoning Valley shares the story of Trumbull County leading a new group buying program for gasoline that will be be available to all governments and school districts in the county. The contract is expected to save the county alone $40,000 a year. While that may not sound like a ton of money, if similar group buying efforts were implemented across the 16 counties of Northeast Ohio the savings would certainly pile up.

Paglia said Mahoning County is pursuing a similar fuel savings initiative. He said said that the commissioners’ action today to approve the contract was a culmination of efforts by members of the Trumbull County Roundtable and the Mahoning County Metro Leaders Roundtable to work together on joint purchasing opportunities.

The Trumbull County Roundtable is a group of about 20 county, city, village and township officials who meet regularly to discuss ways to save taxpayers money and provide more effective services through joint purchasing, service sharing and other collaborative efforts. The Mahoning group is similar in size and scope.

The Regional Chamber helped to found the groups and facilitates their meetings.

“I want to compliment Commissioners for helping to make the fuel savings project a reality. This action has the opportunity of eventually saving local governments and school districts in Trumbull and Mahoning counties hundreds of thousands of dollars annually,” Paglia said. “This is a great example of how local governments can work together on a regional basis to make government more efficient and effective and lessen the tax burden on citizens and businesses.”
