Northeast Ohio Featured at Global Metro Summit

Northeast Ohio’s progress toward a more vibrant economic future will be featured at the Global Metro Summit in Chicago on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, that is being hosted by Brookings Metro Policy Program, the London School of Economics and Political Science and the International Forum of Deutsche Bank.

In preparation for the Summit, the organizers issued on Nov. 30 the Global MetroMonitor that examines data on economic output and employment in 150 of the world’s largest metropolitan economies, located in 53 countries, from 1993 to 2010. Cleveland’s economic performance since the end of the Great Recession ranked 49th out of the 150 global metros based on economic output and employment. Cleveland had ranked 131st during the recession.

“The Fund for Our Economic Future is encouraged to see early indications that our region’s economy is well positioned to grow in the still nascent economic recovery,” said Fund President Brad Whitehead.

Whitehead will part of an international panel that will explore regional economic transformation at the Summit. Other participants in the panel will be representing Torino, Italy; Barcelona, Spain; the Twin Cities region of Minnesota; and Seattle-Puget Sound in Washington. The panel will be moderated by Ricky Burdett, Director of the London School of Economics Cities Programme.

Northeast Ohio’s participation in the Global Metro Summit has garnered the region international media attention. Time Magazine profiled how the experience of Torino in turning around its manufacturing economy could provide some inspiration for Northeast Ohio’s efforts to revitalize our economy.

The Summit is tied to a collaborative effort that the Fund, other partners in Advance Northeast Ohio and Brookings have been working on together for more than a year. The goal of the collaboration is to persuade the federal government to provide more flexible and targeted assistance to support the region’s economic development strategies.
