Chambers Call for Redesigning Ohio

Posted byChris Thompson - 12.29.2010

The permanent fiscal crisis in the public sector is forcing innovation across all levels of government and recently a group of chambers of commerce from across Northeast Ohio collaborated on a report that recommends several fundamental changes in the design of state government. The state faces a two-year budget shortfall that could top $10 billion, so the report (endorsed by four chambers in Northeast Ohio), is very timely.

Importantly, the report calls on fundamental changes to local government in Ohio. This has been a priority of the partners of Advance Northeast Ohio (including those same chambers), as well. The report says: "it's time for a more efficient relationship between Ohio's state and local governments ... Ohio's local governments must become smarter, cheaper and more effective. To get there, we need a productivity enhancing strategy that results in more public value, lower costs and fewer political subdivisions." The chambers call for a new process to have county-led local government collaboration efforts.

I encourage you to check ou the full report. And let us know whether you think 2011 will be remembered as the year when local government collaboration efforts in Ohio really take off.
