3 Industries Driving Job Growth

A network of regional and local organizations and institutions are helping foster higher-growth industries in Northeast Ohio and a recent conference in Akron highlighted why Northeast Ohio is doing better than some might expect in adding new jobs to the economy.
ABJ Reporter Jim Mackinnon covered the Fueling Ohio's New Job Growth conference that brought together Northeast Ohio business people and experts in the fields of advanced energy, polymers and coatings, and biomedical sciences to talk about prospects for job growth in their areas.
Those are three industries that continued to hire and show stability even as Ohio lost hundreds of thousands of jobs the past couple of years during the ''Great Recession," he wrote.
Recently, the state of Ohio gave a big boost to the region's bioscience industry by awarding $7 million to growing, innovative companies in that sector. Those grants were part of the Third Frontier program.
NorTech is promoting and encouraging what appears to be a never-ending string of companies working in the celantech/advanced energy space. Check out JumpStart's growing portfolio of early-stage cleantech companies, including ABS Materials, which recently received a visit from the governor. And keep a close eye on a new venture that will bring clean energy to the Mahononing Valley.
Check out Polymer Ohio! to learn more abou the polymers and coatings sector in Northeast Ohio. A big opportunity in the future is increased use of innovative polymers in medical applications. This is one focus of the Austen Bioinnovation Institute in Akron and many companies like Ovation Polymers in Medina are developing applications for the health care sector.
