Greater Cleveland Second in Job Growth

Posted byChris Thompson - 06.21.2010

Here is a list that it's pretty cool to be #2 on.

From January through May, the Cleveland area was second to only Indianapolis when it comes to the percentage growth in private sector employment. Ranking second among the nation's largest 40 metropolitan areas is more than just cool, it tells us we are making progress toward a more vibrant economic future for Northeast Ohio.

Indeed, the Cleveland metro area has seen employment in general and manufacturing employment in particular grow every month so far this year. I wonder how long it's been since that was the case?

The news that Cleveland is #2 comes from a great blog, Pittsburgh's Future, run by Harold D. Miller. While focused on the Pittsburgh economy, I find the blog provides invaluable insight into what it takes to revitalize a region's economy. As I noted earlier when I highlighted that Ohio led the country in job growth in April (by the way the state ranked 6th best in May), there are signs that this economic recovery will be led by regions in the Midwest. And Miller's chart (which I've altered slightly to highlight Cleveland's success) reinforces that point as five of the top 10 metros are in the Midwest.

Sustaining these good numbers over years (not months) will require the region to continue to align around the four priorities of Advance Northeast Ohio:

  • Business Growth
  • Talent Development
  • Racial & Economic Inclusion
  • Government Collaboration & Efficiency

Together we can indeed Advance Northeast Ohio.
