Stark State to Help Build Wind Energy Industry

Posted byChris Thompson - 10.19.2010

Northeast Ohio's strong manufacturing base is a natural fit for the growing wind turbine industry but becoming a global leader in that sector will require significant research and development capacity. The state of Ohio recently announced it would make a $2.1 million investment in that capacity by forming the Wind Energy Research and Development Center at Stark State College.

The center is a collaboration among the college, Timken Co., the Stark Development Board and the Stark County Port Authority. Read more in this story from the Business Journal, and this editorial from the Canton Repository.

Timken and Stark State expect to invest $8 million in the new center, which will test new turbine designs. Timken makes bearings and other products used in wind turbines.

The center joins a set of assets in the region that are helping support the emerging wind turbine industry. Check out more about this growing industry at WIRE-Net's Global Wind Network web site.
