Being Average Pays Off Big Time

Being average certainly can have its benefits.

Ohio Chancellor James Petro, speaking to a group of public university trustees and other community leaders at the Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown today, said that if Ohio elevated its college attainment rate from the present level of 26% to the national average of 30% it would generate $15 billion in annual economic benefit to the state. In particular, our state's growing employers would find it much easier to fill their open job slots.

Petro, who has only been in the job 13 weeks, said he is considering a variety of options that will help Ohio increase the number of degrees awarded by its community colleges and public universities. One objective is to increase the amount of merit-based and need-based scholarships available from the state from less than $200 million a year to about $500 million.

He will submit his recommendations to the Legislature by mid-August and vowed to propose meaningful changes that will work.
