Townships Consider Joint Police District

Posted by Advance Northeast Ohio - 11.28.2011

Lorain County's 18 townships are discussing the formation of a joint police district with the Lorain County Sheriff's Office, an idea that allows for increased road patrols, cost-sharing and supports the Advance Northeast Ohio goal of government efficiency.

The police district would allow townships to contract deputies for road patrols in their area, with deputies being assigned  to a specific area in the township, according to The Morning Journal. The more townships that participate the higher the savings generated.

Expenses tied to the joint police district could be covered by a levy estimated to cost $30.50 a year for the owner of a house valued at $100,000.

This sounds like a good idea. I live in a township in southern Portage County. I like the township form of government structure. I believe it to be much more efficient and less costly than a city or village structure. The legal prohibition against having an income tax is especially appealing. One of my concerns over the years has been the lack of police/Sherriff protection. The cost seems very reasonable. I would certainly vote for this in my county.
