Greater Cleveland Aquarium Opens Its Doors

Cleveland’s First Energy Powerhouse building, once used to power the city’s electric railway and streetcar systems, is welcoming some new tenants to the historic landmark – of a fishy variety. The building, originally designed in 1892, is now home to the Greater Cleveland Aquarium, the only free standing aquarium in the state of Ohio.

After much anticipation, the $33 million Aquarium is set to open its doors to the public on January 21, 2012. The Greater Cleveland Aquarium will be the second largest free-standing aquarium in the Great Lakes region, with one million gallons of water in 40 tanks.

According to the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, the Greater Cleveland Aquarium will be the only aquarium in a 150-mile radius, making it a major draw for tourists in the area. In fact, the builders hope to lure 500,000 visitors to the Aquarium in its first year.

With nearly 5,000 sea creatures on display, the Aquarium will feature a 145-foot walk-through tunnel. This tunnel, or “SeaTube,” will allow visitors to walk under the 250,000 gallon tank, which will hold sharks, eels, and other majestic aquatic life.
