Posted by ThePlus - 04.27.2010

While other cities and states position themselves as biomedical leaders, few can make as strong a case as The Plus region. The institutions, corporations and medical professionals found throughout Northeast Ohio create a foundation to generate innovation, investment and talent in the biomedical sector. All of these factors combined help make The Plus region the medical capital.

With 60 hospitals, 30 colleges and universities, strong manufacturing capabilities and billions of dollars in public and private investment, The Plus region has emerged as the place for biomedical business. The region’s biomedical industry is growing on average by 7.4% annually and today is home to 600+ biomedical businesses. Since 2003, Northeast Ohio biomedical companies have attracted more than $800 million in new equity. Organizations like Team NEO and BioEnterprise help fuel this growth as they attract businesses and offer support to biomedical companies.

To aid the development of growing biomedical companies, The Plus is home to some of the best universities, hospitals, and medical professionals. In 2009, Northeast Ohio research institutions received more than $500 million in federal and industry awards. Additionally, The Plus employs more than 230,000 health care and bioscience workers and takes pride in its nationally-ranked health care systems which include the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and Summa Health System.
