Lorain’s ADI Wind Creates Innovative Prototype for Wind Turbines

Northeast Ohio is poised to become a major player in the developing wind energy market with the help of local entrepreneurs like Mike and Jerry Winiasz of ADI Wind LLC. Based in Lorain County, the innovators at ADI Wind have begun developing a gearbox for wind turbines, which is smaller and lighter than other designs. Their unique design has already caught many people’s attention and has the potential to one day make a significant impact in The Plus region’s economy.
While people across the globe are seeking alternative energy sources, ADI Wind is looking to capitalize on the emerging wind market. They have created a prototype of their product, which uses only two gears instead of the standard four to six gears found in a conventional wind turbine. “The ADI prototype, made from recycled titanium, multiplies the revolutions of turbine propellers 38 times, allowing smaller generators to create the same amount of electric power as much larger generators.”
Their innovative idea has already attracted funding and started to gain traction in the wind energy market. The Great Lakes Innovation and Development Enterprise (GLIDE) awarded ADI Wind $25,000 in March 2009 while the Defense Metals Technology Center in North Canton awarded them a $50,000 grant to help build their prototype. ADI hopes to begin selling their titanium gearboxes within the next year.
