Aerospace Industry in The Plus: Soaring to New Heights

Northeast Ohio has a deep-rooted heritage in the aerospace industry, which is helping grow and develop The Plus region’s economy. From the number of aerospace-related companies to our talented workforce, The Plus region holds a competitive advantage over many other regions and major cities.

Given Northeast Ohio’s historic ties to the aerospace sector, which dates back as early as World War I, The Plus region has established itself as a major hub for aerospace component design, engineering, and production. In fact, more than 2,300 firms whose products and processes are instrumental to the aerospace sector call Northeast Ohio home. These firms include well-known names such as Parker Hannifin, The Timken Company, Goodrich Landing Gear, Alcoa Aerospace, Automotive and Commercial Transportation and more. In addition, The Plus is also home to the NASA Glenn Research Center, where world-class research, technology, and capability development efforts are advancing the exploration of our solar system and beyond. The Center also maintains a global leadership role in aeronautics.

While Northeast Ohio’s economy has long benefited from its strengths in the aerospace sector, The Plus region’s transition to developing more sophisticated products has resulted in even more economic growth for Northeast Ohio. In fact, between 1993 and 2008, Gross Regional Product (GRP) for the aerospace sector grew 59%. Today, aerospace GRP represents 24% of all manufacturing here. Sophisticated industries like navigational, measuring & control and more traditional industries like fabricated metal manufacturing have all contributed to this growth.

Ultimately, as Northeast Ohio’s economy continues to diversify and grow, aerospace will continue to play a significant role. The growth in the aerospace industry will mean more jobs for Northeast Ohioans. Additionally, the jobs created by aerospace-related occupations will results in higher wages for employees. In fact, on average, aerospace-related jobs pay 36% more when compared to all other industries in the region. More great news for The Plus!
