West Bank’s Powerhouse Building Makes Way for New Aquarium

Posted by ThePlus - 10.24.2011

The infamous Powerhouse building on Cleveland’s West Bank of the Flats will soon be welcoming some new tenants – sharks, starfish, seahorses, manta rays and dozens upon dozens of exotic sea creatures. These unique species will comprise the 70,000 square-foot Greater Cleveland Aquarium, which is projected to draw some 480,000 visitors a year.

Once used to house coal-fueled steam engines, beginning in early 2012, the historic Powerhouse building will be transformed into one of the country’s most unique aquariums. The aquarium will feature an acrylic-walled “SeaTube” that will enable visitors to walk underneath the marine environment. What is more, developers project that the aquarium will generate $27 million in economic impact per year.

As residents await the Greater Cleveland Aquarium’s opening, there are a number of other exciting projects underway throughout the region. In April 2012, gambling enthusiasts will be able to try their luck at the new Horseshoe Casino in downtown Cleveland while art aficionados will soon gaze upon contemporary art’s finest collections at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland’s new home – a $26.7 million investment. Football fans can travel a little farther south to see how the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton is undergoing a $27 million expansion that will be complete in 2013 for the Hall’s 50th anniversary.
