Innovation Northeast Ohio Style

Innovation drives the global economy and this week the region's media offered up a few outstanding examples of innovation Northeast Ohio style.

A. Schulman Inc. in Fairlawn has developed a plastic made out of wheat straw. Robert Schoenberger of the Plain Dealer has a great story on this environmentally friendly development. A. Schulman is just one of dozens of materials companies in our region developing exciting new products. The thought of cutting my grass with a lawn mower partly made from straw is pretty cool.

While A. Schulman is a venerable name in the region, ViewRay is a relatively new company. Recruited here with the help of Team NEO and BioEnterprise, ViewRay is developing a way to improve the accuracy of radiation used to kill cancerous tissue. ViewRay moved here because it wanted to take advantage of Northeast Ohio's heritage of innovation in medical imaging. It looks like that move is turning out pretty well. The company recently attracted $20 million from investors led Siemens Venture Capital. Expect to hear more about ViewRay in the future and you can learn more by reading Chuck Soder's story on CrainsCleveland.com.
