Emerging Industries Changing Face of Region

Every day there are more signs that the future of Northeast Ohio will both be similar and very different from our past. We still make things here, but what we make is changing with the demands of the global economy.
For example, Akron is using its global leadership in advanced materials to make the next generation of medical devices and implants. Those efforts got a $250,000 boost from the State of Ohio recently, when Gov. Ted Strickland declared Akron a Biomaterials Innovation Hub. Learn more about the hub and the role the Austen BioInnovation Institute will play in commercializing innovations emerging from Akron in this story from the Akron Beacon Journal.
Advanced energy is another arena where Northeast Ohio is emerging as both an innovation and a manufacturing hub. Earlier this month Cleveland hosted a national conference exploring the business opportunities surrounding the building of offshore wind turbines in the Great Lakes. Check out John Funk’s coverage of this emerging industry in the Plain Dealer.
And Phycal, a Highland Heights company, will get up to $24 million from the federal government to see if there’s a way to grow and extract oil from algae.
Now that’s a lot of innovation. And that’s why Northeast Ohio will have a vibrant future.
