Opportunity Abounds for Government Collaboration

Posted byChris Thompson - 05.30.2011

"Opportunity Abounds" is the title of a new report issued by the Fund for Our Economic Future that highlights the need for more efficient, effective local government.

The report has attracted attention from the media, including this editorial from the Akron Beacon Journal, which laments that over the years local government has become a growth industry.

More important than the issuance of a report, there are ever-increasing signs that government officials are eager to address the need to lower the cost of local government. Recently, Lake County government officials met to explore how they could collaborate together to lower costs. And the state Legislature is considering using $50 million in the state budget to encourage more government collaboration.

But no one should think this work is easy. As residents of Stark County are learning, government collaboration never comes easily. This editorial by the Canton Repository, calls on elected officials and others to set aside their petty grievances and work toward consolidating 911 dispatch in that county. What should residents do to make sure government collaboration become the norm and not the exception in the future?
