Workforce Development Priority of Governor and ANEO

Posted by Advance Northeast Ohio - 01.20.2012

Governor John Kasich demonstrated his shared focus with Advance Northeast Ohio regarding the need to elevate the region's talent by announcing a new workforce development initiative this week that will foster greater collaboration among businesses and community colleges in the state.

The governor told The Plain Dealer he is scrapping the old, disjointed approach to training in Ohio and replacing it with a new system that will be run directly from his office using the state's community colleges as breeding grounds while demanding more cooperation from businesses. The new system will help to address the 72,341 open positions in Ohio that are unfilled as employers claim candidates are unqualified.

Advance Northeast Ohio partner Lorain County Community College is one of three community colleges in the state participating in the initiative. Their program, Career ReStart for Disproportionately Unemployed Minorities, will be geared towards Blacks and Hispanics, especially women. Other participating schools include Columbus State Community College and Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.
