Manufacturing Matters and Is Growing in NEO
Posted byChris Thompson - 03.02.2012
A national debate is raging over how much the manufacturing sector matters to the U.S. economy and our colleague at the Brookings Institution, Mark Muro, has provided a good overview of why regions that get their manufacturing strategies right will be more prosperous in the future.
The good news is there are increasing signs that Northeast Ohio's manufacturing sector is not only on the rebound, but it's leading our region's growth. Indeed, now one of the greatest challenges facing our region's manufacturers is fininding workers.
The Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition will host a workforce summit on April 12 at Youngstown State University to spread the word about career opportunities in manufacturing and explore how the region can help manufacturers fill their open positions.
Lately we've seen manufacturers in diverse industries like consumer electronics, Kent Displays; oil and gas, Exterran; and steel, Timken announce their expansion plans. These are all signs that are efforts to build a more vibrant regional economy are paying dividends.
